Programming used to be free

The article examines how proprietary LLMs like Mythos are shifting programming from freely accessible tools to expensive, gatekept systems requiring significant computational resources. Drawing on the history of the mainframe era and the Free Software movement, the author argues that LLM-first workflows may regress computing back to a plutocracy. This threatens decades of democratization that enabled self-taught developers to enter the field.
