Australia threatens tech companies with 2.25 percent tax if they don’t pay publishers

Australia is proposing a 2.25% revenue tax on social media and search companies that operate within the country, with an opt-out available if companies negotiate direct payments to local publishers. The scheme replaces the 2021 News Media Bargaining Code, which Meta has been resisting—the company already blocks news links in Canada to avoid similar obligations.
